Harvesting Wild Reishi in New York’s Hudson Valley
The Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma Lucidum or Lingzhi in traditional Chinese medicine), has been used to boost the immune system for 2,000 plus years. The specific epithet lingzhi comes from Chinese, meaning “divine mushroom” and is known as the “mushroom of immortality”.
The fungi used to make this tincture is wildly harvested in the Hudson Valley and immediately prepared and dehydrated. The double extraction process begins with soaking the dehydrated fungi in alcohol for at least six weeks. The soaked mushrooms are then simmered in water for the second extraction, which releases beneficial polysaccharides.
Reishi contains compounds like ganoderic acid, a non-water soluble triterpene. Ganoderic acids have been found to have direct cancer cell cytotoxicity on a wide variety of cancer cell lines. For this reason, reishi is being studied for its potential in helping to kill cancer cells. An alcohol extraction is the only way to get these compounds out of the mushrooms. Double extraction provides maximum health benefits for the body to consume the mushroom compounds that can only be obtained by a double extraction process.
